MHAC would like to take a moment and shine the spotlight on our very own LUSU President, Tom Fenske!

 

Tom Fenske's leadership as President of LUSU is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the well-being of his members. Known for his deep empathy, Tom approaches each member’s concerns with genuine care, ensuring every voice is heard and valued. He understands that the strength of a union lies in its ability to unite diverse perspectives, and he has cultivated an atmosphere where members feel supported, even in the most challenging times. His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully has made him a trusted figure, not just a leader, but a steadfast advocate for fairness. Renowned for his relentless pursuit of justice, Tom has defended the rights and interests of our membership at every opportunity.

Tom’s sense of fairness is a cornerstone of his presidency. He approaches negotiations with an unwavering commitment to equity, balancing the needs of the membership with the realities of organizational constraints. Whether addressing wage disparities, workplace safety, human rights or benefits, Tom insists on transparency and integrity. His reputation for fairness extends beyond the union, earning respect from both sides of the negotiating table. This impartial approach ensures that outcomes are not just favourable but also sustainable, fostering long-term trust and collaboration. With a fearless commitment to standing up to administrators when needed, he has invested countless hours to ensure that every voice is heard and valued with our community. 

Although union leadership often goes unrecognized, Tom remains deeply committed to his responsibilities, constantly working to improve the lives of those he represents. He is a skilled negotiator who meticulously prepares for every discussion, ensuring that the best interests of his members are always at the forefront. His hard work often takes place behind the scenes, yet it yields tangible benefits—improved working conditions, fair contracts, and a more united workforce.

His leadership has been truly impactful, and his contributions have not gone unnoticed. Tom's exceptional work earned him the prestigious 40 Under 40 Award, a testament to his significant impact both within our union and the wider community. Through his dedication, Tom has not only helped LUSU navigate challenges but has also inspired LUSU (delete us) to unite and grow stronger together.

A few kind words from Gisele Pageau, former LUSU president: As Tom’s mentor and former work-wife, I could not be prouder of the leader he has become. Watching him grow into such a compassionate, determined, and skilled union president has been an inspiring journey. His ability to navigate the complexities of union leadership with empathy and fairness is truly admirable. I have always believed in his potential, but seeing the tangible impact of his hard work on the lives of his members has deepened my admiration. Tom’s accomplishments are a testament to his unwavering dedication, and I feel privileged to have played a role in his journey. LUSU is so lucky to have Tom at the helm.
